Fan fiction is the way that people keep their favorite books alive, even after they are gone and done with. Using fan fiction, lesser characters can get more attention, characters can grow older and new things can happen in the lives of anyone within the story. Sometimes even new characters are introduced. The Harry Potter books are extremely popular with both children and adults, so it was only inevitable that there would be tons of fan fiction written around the original seven books, even after author J.K. Rowling's story has ended. Not only do the stories continue from the end of the originals, but they also sometimes tell alternative versions, as well as prequels.

In The Beginning

What is Harry Potter had a godmother that worked at Hogwarts when he started there? What if Ron Weasely had been killed while they were still students at Hogwarts and it caused Hermoine Granger to turn evil? With all of her abilities, would she have become a true villain in the tale? Fan fiction that happens during the Hogwarts school years of Harry, Hemoine, and Ron includes different teachers, new family members, different romantic partnerships and so much more. There is no end to the different story lines that are out there. And with the ability of fan fiction writers to create alternative realities in their writing the possibilities are endless.

The Story Continues

Even more popular in fan fiction than new stories based on the old stories and new love affairs, are the stories told about the children of Harry, Ron and Hermoine. At the end of the final Harry Potter it was revealed that Harry and Ginny had children together and so did Ron and Hermoine. Through fan fiction people who loved the Harry Potter series can learn how these children grew up, what their time was like at Hogwarts and how their parents lives are as adults. How many children do they have? Are Harry's children plagued by the issues Harry was as a child? And, of course, what Hogwarts house do each of them get into?

In The Past

Lastly, of course, there is fan fiction regarding the past, prior to the lives of the children portrayed in J.K. Rowling's books. What was life like for Harry's parents, Lily and James? Lily and James stories are very popular. Learn more about Tom Riddle and how he ended up the way he was in the Harry Potter series. Even more interesting are stories revolving around Harry's parents never getting together. What would the world of Hogwarts be like without Harry?

Fan fiction is a fun way to keep the story alive. Many fan fiction sites are available online for Harry Potter tales. Anyone can write fan fiction and reading stories written by numerous different people gives the story line an array of possibilities; past, present and future!
