Is Harry Potter Fan Fiction Worthwhile?
Ever since Harry Potter was released, people have been doing all sorts of great things with it. Everyone loves to read and people would spend days waiting for the newest book to be released. Even kids who did not read would finish the book within a day and they would think about it for weeks to come. That is the impact that J.K. Rowling had with her amazing Harry Potter series. It captured the imagination of the younger audience and really had kids lusting for more. In fact, when there were years in between some of the books, people turned to fan fiction for entertainment.
Whether or not Harry Potter fan fiction is worthwhile is a question that does not have a simple answer. It could be yes and it could just as easily be no. People say that fan fiction is not real and it is not what actually happens. However, what really is real? Harry Potter is a fake, imaginary character that Rowling came up with. It is not as if he actually existed in the world and it is not as if wizards, witches, magic and Lord Voldemort are real entities either. They are all made up, so what is wrong with having made up fan fiction?
The great thing about Harry Potter fan fiction is that it allows fans to get involved in a way that is otherwise not possible. They get to exercise their own creativity. Whether it is in making short stories that are a few pages long, or writing chapters worth of material, they get to feel a part of the Harry Potter saga as well. If you ever go to a Harry Potter fan fiction site, there are so many different sections. You can split the stories up in terms of length or in terms of their content. You can even decide what plot line you want to go with. The first bulk of stories started after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, so they are called Pre-OoTF stories (Pre- Order of the Phoenix). Then there are stories that come before each of the remaining books that were written. This way, you know how much of the real story has passed before this fan fiction was written.
There are even fan fiction stories written about certain couples. There are Harry/Ginny fan fics, Harry/Hermione, Ron/Hermione and other couples as well. This gives the reader a chance to see what could have happened had J.K. Rowling taken her story in a different direction. It is almost as if these stories bring the world to life and make it seem even more real, as so many are writing about it.
The greatest gift that the fan fiction gives is that people who like to write get to express themselves. You never know where the next great author might come from. In fact, it may even be someone who has written a Harry Potter fan fiction and decided that they really like to write. If they had not written the fan fiction, they may never have known.
None of these stories are meant to be replacements for the real thing. It is just people having some fun with their spare time and telling the story how they could see it developing. Some are goofy, some serious, some romantic, but they are all unique in their own ways. That is what makes Harry Potter fan fiction so great, and no one can say it is not worthwhile. It is to those who write it and those who read it. Everyone else can choose to ignore the fan fiction and stick to the real deal! After all, none of these stories is going to replace the actual Harry Potter books. They are no threat to the author's story, and are just a bit of fun that people have on the side while they are waiting for the newest book to come out. It is harmless and shows how much people love Harry Potter and his world.
